Look, here is all I was trying to say. At the end of the comic book, well, it's obviously hilarious because I'm really funny. So there is at least that level that I care about you and I want you to feel awesome. And that is also why I drew it amazing. And then too there are the levels at which there are harmonic happy and sad endings for the different characters. There's Lily's reality where she feels she has arrived at a new awareness. Then there is the reality of the other Duolingo characters who think she's crazy. Then there's even the many awarenesses of the dozens of readers, who maybe see that Lily's victory has left her transfigured and vacated, so who has won and what? And different camps of those subdozens might think that the change is bad and some might think it's good.

And a third might think what's centrally interesting is that Lily's transfiguration brings her closer to them, to they, as readers. As compared to the other Duolingo characters who seem content to be projected on a screen without awareness of the same. This third subdozen dubs Lily's tranfiguration her "Unlicensing".

Much poignancy inheres to the limitations of narrative such that a story even has to end at all. The death of it renders it unsatisfactory just as it renders it coherent: superbummer. But it's like you can only evaluate and love something if it's in a discrete enough packet to at least be able to talk about it -- if I don't know what we are talking about then what are we even talking about? And so it is too with the noble teenager, evaporating into a taxpayer before our very eyes, or even taking a gap year. Without a doubt, every person who is reading this has "squared the circle". - Dan Hill
